Today we want to share with you the origin of the hotel Villa Engracia, a place where history and nature intertwine to offer a unique experience of tranquility and wellness. Discover with us the past of this ancient spa, located in the idyllic residential environment of the farmhouses of Espluga de Francolí, a fashionable destination in the early twentieth century and a reference point for those seeking serenity and health.
The history of Villa Engracia dates back to 1815, when the Font del Ferro spring flowed into the Masía del Agua, a property that in 1890 was acquired by the Anguera family and subsequently sold to Jordi and Pere Antoni Torres. With a bold vision, they transformed this place into the renowned Villa Engracia Spa, inaugurating an era of hospitality and wellness that endures to this day.
With an initial capital of fifteen thousand “duros,” the Villa Engracia Spa became a refuge for travelers in search of the medicinal properties of water flowing from a black rock. Strategically located near the Monastery of Poblet and surrounded by mountains, springs and hermitages, the spa became a prestigious destination, attracting visitors from everywhere.
However, the history of Villa Engracia is also an example of adaptation and resilience. In 1936, with the outbreak of the Civil War, the spa changed its purpose to become a military hospital for the Republican army, demonstrating its commitment to the community even in difficult times.
But it was not all war and transformation. For years, Villa Engracia was a popular destination thanks to the “Comisión de Colonias Escolares de Vacaciones”, organized by the Barcelona City Council and led by the president of the mandate, Dr. Salvador Roca. Generations of children and young people enjoyed the natural beauty and therapeutic waters of this place, creating memories that endure to this day.
And what about La Font de Ferro, the spring that has witnessed so many memorable moments over the years. It is clear water, recommended for both adults and children, flowed in small pools of water, creating an oasis of freshness and vitality amid nature.
In 2022, the English Summer S.A. group acquired the hotel and apartments of Villa Engracia, with the purpose of preserving its charm and offering a unique experience in every corner of our cozy apartments, along with the warm hospitality of our team.
