Exploring the greenways in Tarragona is a unique way to discover the province at a leisurely pace, surrounded by nature and with the charm of paths that were once railway tracks. These routes are suitable for both cyclists and walkers. What we like most is the feeling of following a historic route (through tunnels, viaducts and vineyard landscapes) without worrying about cars or traffic.
In this article, we review the four official greenways in Tarragona, what you will find on each one and some practical tips for getting the most out of them.
The Terra Alta Greenway is perhaps the most popular. It stretches for 23 kilometres and connects Arnes with Pinell de Brai. The route passes through railway tunnels (some over 700 metres long), viaducts and mountainous landscapes that are bathed in spectacular colours in autumn.
The Baix Ebre Greenway connects Tortosa with Terra Alta along a route of approximately 25 kilometres. It is very varied, featuring citrus groves, orchards, riverside forests and the ever-present Ebro River. It also connects with Terra Alta, allowing you to extend the experience to over 40 continuous kilometres.
The sensation of cycling alongside the Ebro River with the mountains in the background is one you will never forget. We particularly recommend doing this route by bicycle, as it is comfortable and wide.
Among the greenway routes in Tarragona, this is the most unique. The flat paths of the Ebro Delta run through rice fields, lagoons and birdwatching spots. Although it is not strictly speaking a railway line, it is part of the network and offers a completely different landscape.
The old Val de Zafán railway line connected Teruel with Tortosa. In its Catalan section, it crosses Terra Alta and Baix Ebre, linking up with other greenways in Tarragona. It is ideal for those looking for a longer route or even a journey lasting several days.
The succession of tunnels and viaducts is impressive: some pass through entire mountains, and the views of the River Ebro from the bridges are unforgettable.
In addition to the four official greenways, there are projects to restore railway lines such as the Cambrils–Montbrió del Camp line, a shorter route closer to the Costa Daurada. Although it is not part of the official network, it is a good alternative for those looking for easy routes near the sea.

The greenway routes in Tarragona are perfect for couples, families or friends. Our advice: if you have children, opt for flat sections such as the Ebro Delta; for experienced cyclists, the Terra Alta – Baix Ebre combination is a fun challenge.
